WASHINGTON — The evangelical pastor chosen to give the benediction at President Barack Obama’s inauguration has withdrawn after anti-gay remarks he made two decades ago surfaced.

The Rev. Louie Giglio (pictured) said in a statement Thursday that he’s withdrawing because he thinks the message of mercy he intended will be dwarfed by attention to his past comments.
Audio of the sermon was posted Wednesday by the liberal website ThinkProgress. In the sermon, Giglio condemns what he called the aggressive pressure to condone the “homosexual lifestyle.”
Addie Whisenant, a spokeswoman for the Presidential Inaugural Committee, says the committee had chosen Giglio because of his work to end human trafficking. Whisenant says the committee wasn’t aware of Giglio’s past comments when they invited him. The inauguration takes place on January 21.

Fantasia To Headline This Year’s Super Bowl Gospelfest:
R&B songstress Fantasia Barrino (pictured) will be headlining the much-anticipated Super Bowl Gospel Celebration, which takes place at the University of New Orleans Lakefront Arena on Friday, February 1 during Super Bowl week. The actual game is being played at the New Orleans Superdome on Feb. 3, with Beyoncé featured as the halftime performer.
The event will be hosted by ABC’s “The View” co-host Sherri Shepherd and one of gospel music’s finest singer/writer/producers Kirk Franklin.
Some of gospel’s crème de la crème will also be on hand to perform at the 14th annual musicfest. Donnie McClurkin, Marvin Winans and Bishop Paul S. Morton of New Orleans are slated to perform. There will also be a performance by this year’s NFL “Players’ Choice” hip-hop Christian artist Lecrae, as well as the NFL Players Choir, composed of about 40 current and former players. The choir was formed by Christian NFL players who wanted to share their belief in God and inspire others through music.

Founded by Melanie Few-Harrison, president of Results Marketing & Media, Inc., the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration got its start back in 1999 in Miami during Super Bowl XXXIII weekend. Are Blacks To Blame For Negative Portrayals Of African Americans On Reality TV?:
Are African American households participating in the most racist media propaganda campaign in television history by watching reality TV?
In a recent article on theGrio, Sil Lai Abrams argued that the proliferation of Black performers in reality television programming is doing nothing to help create a positive reality of the African American experience. In fact, Abrams says that our increased participation–which should be a good thing–is creating the opposite effect; it is perpetuating negative stereotypes that create false perceptions of Black people for the nation to consume.
The most recent candidate aspiring to make its way to primetime coonery is “All My Babies’ Mamas, starring Atlanta-based rapper Shawty Lo and his ten babies’ mothers.
The trailer sparked so much controversy that the NAACP reportedly sent a letter to Oxygen’s President Jason Klarman expressing its outrage over the proposed show’s negative portrayal of Black families. And a Change.org petition demanding that the show not air has gotten more than 35,000 signatures. The reality series is reportedly in “early development” and is not green-lighted to air as of yet.

Though other reality TV shows that are enjoying successful runs, like “Love and Hip Hop” And “Basketball Wives,” are not any better.
“The underlying message most of these shows send about blacks is that we’re shallow, impulsive creatures lacking in self-control without any vision of life that doesn’t include vacations (or funerals) they can’t afford, slanging rhymes, having too many children, and shopping oneself into bankruptcy,” Abrams said.

In the decades since the Civil Rights and Black Power movements, the imagery of black people in media, particularly on television, has changed considerably. Now, I’m not a sociologist, but it is my guess that the materialism and “success at any cost” mindset that pervades modern popular culture today is likely a reaction to the economic uncertainty and hopelessness that is the true reality for many black people.Does Abrams have a point?
As a single mother who has struggled against many of the same systemic issues that affect our community (should I list the issues? I think we know them…) I understand the need for escape. Let’s face it: life is hard. Anyone who tries to tell you otherwise deserves a serious double side eye. This entertainment is a form of escape.
The “overnight success” stories of individuals who are as a whole largely without any real discernible talent are the driving force behind the most popular shows such as Love & Hip Hop and Basketball Wives. Reality show “stars” present what appears to be an attainable, glamorous lifestyle to a group of women who may not have the wherewithal or resources needed to carve out a financially stable life for themselves realistically.
But, in the process of enjoying this escape, we are ignoring the emotionally abusive and disrespectful behavior of male cast members such as L&HH’s Stevie J that reinforces the idea that a black man’s power is best expressed through unbridled and unprincipled sexual behavior, as just one example of these show’s many horrible messages.
Are African Americans aiding and abetting in the White media’s creation of these shows, which benefit of their bottom lines but degenerate our image as a whole? While many of us are assail the Black people who are “acting” on these shows, should we refocus that disdain on ourselves?

LOS ANGELES — Former Los Angeles Dodgers and Seattle Mariners outfielder Milton Bradley has been charged with abusing his estranged wife and faces up to 13 years in jail if convicted, city prosecutors announced Friday.
Bradley, 34, was charged on Thursday with 13 misdemeanor counts of assault with a deadly weapon, vandalism and dissuading a witness from making a report.
In addition to jail time, Bradley could face up to $13,000 in fines and restitution if convicted.
He remained free pending a scheduled Jan. 24 arraignment.
Prosecutors contend that Bradley threatened and attacked his wife five times in 2011 and 2012. He was twice arrested at the home in 2011.
”During one incident in November 2012, Bradley allegedly pushed his wife against a kitchen wall and choked her with both hands after she requested that he stop smoking marijuana in front of their children and requested that his friends leave her San Fernando Valley home,” said a statement from the city attorney’s office.
Prosecutors contend that during other confrontations, Bradley kicked his wife in the ribs, approached her with a baseball bat and threatened her with a knife while telling her: ”You’ll be dead b—- before you divorce me.”
”My client denies it,” said Bradley’s attorney, Harland Braun. ”I’ve talked to him already. He said ‘she’s making up stories. I don’t know what she’s talking about.”’
The couple, who have two children, are separated and in the middle of a contentious divorce.
Bradley played 11 years with the Montreal Expos, Cleveland Indians, Dodgers, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs and Seattle Mariners.
His playing history was marred by several confrontational outbursts. The Dodgers traded him to Oakland in 2005 after he threw a water bottle at fans and he had a clubhouse run-in with a reporter. During his brief term with Seattle, he was suspended for a game for bumping an umpire and ejected for arguing a called third strike.
He’s been a free agent since the Mariners released him in 2011.

North Carolina Deaf Man Stabbed After Sign Language Mistaken For Gang Signs:
Two North Carolina deaf men were in the middle of an altercation when a third man, Jarell Neal, approached and stabbed one of them, mistaking his sign language for gang signs, reports Hip-Hop Wired.

With the help of a witness, Cathy Sanford, who said that Neal was walking around the neighborhood after the attack, police were able to track him down. Sanford said she was at home when she heard her dog barking and looked in her back yard where she saw Neal running through it. A warrant was obtained for Neal’s arrest and the 22-year-old was apprehended a few hours later. As of yesterday, he was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury and felonious assault on a handicapped person.
According to Burlington Police Staff Sgt. Mark Yancey, Neal is not in a gang so his motive for stabbing Neal is unknown. He is currently being held on $500,000 bond.
